What is KiwiSaver and why does your choice matter?

KiwiSaver is New Zealand's voluntary retirement savings scheme. When you start working, you're automatically enrolled — and your employer contributes alongside you.

The problem? Most people stay in the default fund they were assigned, often a conservative option that may not match their age, goals, or risk tolerance. Over a 30-year career, the difference between the right fund and the wrong one can be tens of thousands of dollars.

Find My Fund helps you cut through the noise. Compare providers, understand fees, and find the fund that actually fits your life.

Fee Transparency

How hit rate is calculated

Each bar is one year. Green means the fund beat its category average after fees. Grey means it didn’t. A 5/5 fund beat its category in every one of the last five financial years.

Why this matters

One good year can be luck. Repeating it is harder. Hit rate asks whether a manager showed up consistently, not just whether they had one standout year.

Why the window matters

A 3-year window shows recent form. A 10-year window tests performance across a fuller cycle, including tougher markets. Switch between them to see which funds stay proven.

Are you in the right fund?

Check your fund type

Never chose a fund? You're in a default balanced fund. There are 5 types — Defensive, Conservative, Balanced, Growth, and Aggressive. The right one depends on your age and when you'll need the money. A 25-year-old in a conservative fund could miss out on decades of higher growth.

Government contribution

Up to $260/year free

The government adds 25c for every $1 you contribute, up to $260/year. You need to put in at least $1,042.86 between 1 July and 30 June to get the full amount. Your employee payroll deductions count — but employer contributions don't. Self-employed or on a contribution holiday? You'll need to make voluntary payments directly to your provider.

Increase your contribution

~$8/week

Bumping your employee contribution from 3.5% to 4.5% on a $60k salary costs about $8 a week — less than two coffees. That extra 1% goes straight into your KiwiSaver and compounds over decades. The earlier you increase it, the bigger the difference at retirement.

Tax rate check

Check your PIR

Your KiwiSaver returns are taxed at your Prescribed Investor Rate — 10.5%, 17.5%, or 28% based on your income. If your rate is too high, you're losing returns to unnecessary tax. IRD now reconciles this at year-end, but getting it right upfront means more money stays invested and compounding. Ask your provider or check your rate on myIR.

After-fee returns

Is your fund delivering?

A fund charging 1% that returns 12% beats a 0.25% fund returning 6%. Don't just compare fees — compare what you actually get after all costs are deducted. That's the number that grows your balance.

First home withdrawal

Know the trade-off

After 3+ years as a member, you can withdraw most of your KiwiSaver for a first home. But pulling $30k at age 28 could mean ~$150k less at 65 due to lost compound growth. Property is also an asset that grows — just understand both sides before you decide.

6-step KiwiSaver health check

The quick version — tick these off and you've covered the essentials.

  1. 1
Check your fund type. Never chose one? You're in a default balanced fund. Make sure it matches your age and goals.
  2. 2
Getting the full $260? You need to contribute at least $1,042.86/yr of your own money. Payroll deductions count — employer contributions don't. If you're self-employed or on a contribution holiday, set up a $20/week auto-payment to your provider.
  3. 3
Bump your employee contribution. Going from 3.5% to 4.5% costs about $8/week on a $60k salary — that small increase compounds into a big difference over time.
  4. 4
Compare after-fee returns. A higher-fee fund can still outperform a low-fee fund. Focus on what you actually receive after all costs.
  5. 5
Check your PIR. Your KiwiSaver returns are taxed at 10.5%, 17.5%, or 28% based on your income. Too high = unnecessary tax drag on your returns. IRD now reconciles at year-end, but getting it right upfront keeps more money compounding.
  6. 6
Review your provider. Not all providers perform equally. Compare yours against others on returns, fees, and service — switching is free and takes 10–35 days.

Our mission

Our Mission.

Every Kiwi deserves to know exactly what their KiwiSaver is doing. Find My Fund tracks every single fund since day one — returns, fees, risk, and holdings — and puts it all in one place so you can finally see how yours stacks up against the rest.

Financial data is complicated, but understanding your KiwiSaver shouldn't be. Right now, it's incredibly hard for everyday Kiwis to know if their fund is keeping up with its peers. The data exists, but until now, there hasn't been a single place to view it all.

We built Find My Fund to be that one source of truth — taking complex data and turning it into simple, plain-English education. We aren't here to give you financial advice or tell you what to do. Our only goal is to give you the clear comparisons you need to make confident, informed decisions about your money.

We believe in total independence. It's the foundation of everything we do, and it will never change. We simply let the data speak for itself, bringing you the transparent facts so you can confidently choose what's best for you.
